The ruling G17 Plus party marked seven years since it was founded on Tuesday in Belgrade. Its leader Mladjan Dinkic said that the party would continue fighting to modernize Serbia, adding he believed the country would become an EU membership candidate in 2010. As a long-term partner in that context, Dinkic mentioned the Democratic Party, whose leader Boris Tadic attended. Dinkic told his fellow party members that there would only be room in G17 Plus for those who see political activity as a way to help others, and not themselves. "Those who only look out for their own interest should not occupy top political positions," Dinkic stressed. Reflecting on the results achieved by the Serbian government in 2009, Dinkic, the economy minister, remarked that life in Serbia was still difficult, even with the world economic crisis subsiding, which was why it was necessary to put all energy into improving the standard of living.
