The government is asking employers to allow all workers in Serbia to take a paid day off on the day of His Holiness Patriarch Pavle’s funeral. The late head of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC), who passed away on Sunday, will be laid to rest on Thursday, November 19 at 13:00 CET in the Rakovica monastery, according to police (MUP). Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas announced that Thursday will also be a day of mourning on the territory of Belgrade. The city administration and public companies will make sure that the city can function regularly on Thursday, and workers will be able to attend the funeral and pay their respects to the Patriarch. “We are calling on all employers on the territory of the city of Belgrade to organize special working measures in order to allow all employees that want to, to attend the funeral,” according to a statement from the city administration. The statement adds that state institutions must fly their flags at half-mast and museums, theaters, cinemas, media and organizations that feature musical performances and programs must adjust their content in observance to the day of mourning. Three days of mourning have previously been declared nation-wide, starting on Monday.
