Srbijagas General Director Dusan Bajatovic said that Serbia’s gas reserves are "ready" for a possible new gas crisis. “We cannot predict whether there will be a gas crisis or not, we are preparing the storage facility and the serves in the case that there is no gas coming from Ukraine for a period of 60 days,” Bajatovic, who heads the state-owned natural gas enterprise, told Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti. Gas company CEO on reserves, "Russian base" He added that despite claims that there are no economic reasons for disputes between Russia and Ukraine, "there is always fear that politics could stop the flow of gas". “Work on the construction of the Banatski Dvor storage facility is nearing the end and there will be no delays. The equipment is coming, boreholes are being made and more compressors have been ordered. The storage facility will hold in between 280-300 million cubic meters of gas and by mid-December, with the line of production, there will be the possibility of pushing out five million cubic meters of gas daily,” he said. As far as industrial consumers are concerned, Bajatovic said that there will be an agreement signed on Thursday with Eon company for renting a storage facility of 200 million cubic meters in Hungary, which secures the daily amount of three million cubic meters meant for industrial consumers. Asked what Serbia stands to gain with capacities of the South Stream pipeline of 40 billion cubic meters yearly, he said that there will be direct income of EUR 500mn, and that Serbia will be “a central transit hub towards Croatia, the Republic of Srpska, Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro and Romania”. Bajatovic added that with building gas power plant, Serbia could also be a hub for the transport of electricity, and this would open the possibility of developing industries that use gas as a crude material. Asked about the losses of Srbijagas, he said that EUR 120mn was lost on the difference in gas prices, "while EUR 50mn must be collected from debtors sooner or later". Bajatovic also addressed speculation that Russia is in fact building a military base in Nis, to say that “if it were a military base, that would mean that we want to go to war with NATO, and that is not the goal of Serbia or Russia.” “It will be a civilian base which we need, because we do not have the capacity for the level of trouble that could befall us,” he concluded.
