The USAID chief in Serbia says the organization is committed to continuing its operations here until the country joins the EU. Michael Harvey, who heads the mission of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Serbia and Montenegro, believes that this will take place by 2015. USAID chief on date for Serbia's EU accession In an interview to be published by Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti on Monday, Harvey said that USAID had originally been planned to stay in Serbia by 2011, but that that its program had been extended to 2015. He evaluated that over the past nine years, the biggest results were achieved in the area of economic stabilization, "to a certain degree in the area of privatization, preparations of the private sector for competition in foreign markets, and in local self-governance". "We spend a lot of time talking to people from the government and business people. We are searching together for problems and their solutions," said Harvey, adding that inefficiency of commercial courts had been identified, and that computerization is underway at those institutions. The USAID chief also said that the agency had so far invested over USD 500mn in different projects.
