Famed Serbian film director Emir Kusturica says it was unwise to cancel the Pride Parade but that the organizers should have accepted the alternative location. He told B92 that Serbia must continue its European integration regardless of Europe’s stance on recognition of Kosovo. Emir Kusturica discusses Pride Parade Kusturica said that he had many gay friends and that he could not understand distinguishing people on the basis of sexual orientation. He added that the organizers of the Pride Parade should have accepted the offer to hold the event at an alternative location. “I should say that all homosexuals are our people. We are not talking about some kind of conspiracy against those who the police stopped. Is it smart to prohibit something? I don’t think it is, but they did receive that location, and I do not know why they didn’t make use of it, because if we exist as a whole that cannot reach agreement over elementary things, how can we know whether one location is good and another not,” Kusturica surmised. He said that he was not an advocate of the idea that European integration should be continued only if the EU changed its stance on Kosovo, though he could understand those that thought that way. “People live from ideas. Political ideas could take five years to change, or 100 years, maybe never, but an idea that does a job in a various capacity is an idea,” he said. Emir Kusturica (FoNet, archive)
