The announced agreement between EULEX and the Serbian MUP is "consistent" with the mandate of the EU mission in Kosovo, EULEX. This is according to an announcement on Thursday from International Civilian Representative for Kosovo Pieter Feith and representatives of five Western countries, Beta reports. Deal "consistent with EULEX mandate" "Based upon our detailed examination of the legal issues surrounding the technical agreement between EULEX and the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Serbia on police cooperation, we conclude that the instruments of technical cooperation that EULEX made on its own behalf are consistent with its mandate to strengthen border management and have no bearing on the question of Kosovo's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity," reads a statement. The joint statement by Feith and the heads of mission of France, Germany, Italy, Great Britain and the U.S in Kosovo was released by the U.S. Embassy in Pristina. The five countries have recognized the February 2008 unilateral independence declaration by the province's ethnic Albanians. "The Republic of Kosovo is not a party to this technical arrangement, but we commend the commitment and interest of the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo in combating illicit cross-border activities," reads the statement. The signatories stated that they strongly supported the work of Kosovo's institutions on "the Euro-Atlantic future of the Republic of Kosovo." It adds that Feith and the mission heads of France, Germany, Italy, Great Britain and the U.S. held discussions on "improving the fight against international crime and corruption, as well as on resources and models for facilitating regional police cooperation".
