The Serbian government will be debating the proposed measures for protecting worker rights during the economic crisis at Thursday’s cabinet meeting. The proposed measures were confirmed last week by the government’s working group and are expected to be discussed with social partners from the unions and companies before they are adopted. Govt. to debate worker rights Labor and Social Policies Minister Rasim Ljajic said earlier that the working group agreed on a set of measures, the most important being those related to linking periods of employment, which would enable many to achieve all the needed conditions for receiving a pension, but also the question of health insurance and the payment of outstanding wages owed to workers. The authorities will be analyzing whether certain employers are violating key legal elements, which could lead to charges and sanctions against certain companies, Ljajic said. Since Serbia has more people per capita employed in the state administration than any regional or EU country, Economy Minister Mladjan Dinkic stated that a draft law will also be discussed for the necessary amount of officials in local administrations, which includes local public companies, and a law for state officials will be debated as well. Dinkic said that he believes that the drafts for these two laws will be finished by early October and will be adopted by the parliament by the end of the month, so that the systemization of jobs could be finished by the end of the year. “Starting January 2010, the excess workers will leave their jobs in the state administration, and new people will not be allowed to be employed at these positions,” Dinkic said.
