The 95th anniversary of the Battle of Cer was marked on Sunday in Tekeris, western Serbia. The Serbian Army victory represented the first triumph of the Allies in the First World War. Battle of Cer anniversary marked Delegations laid wreaths and flowers at the Monument to Serb Heroes, accompanied by high state and military honors. Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac, and Russian, Slovakian, Czech, French, British, Austrian and Hungarian military representatives were all present. The nearby town of Loznica and an association set up to uphold the traditions of Serbia's 1912-1918 liberation wars were also represented. The battle, fought on Mt. Cer, was one of the most important victories of the war for the Serb army. It started on August 12, 1914, and ended with the withdrawal of the defeated Austro-Hungarian troops in the night between August 19-20. Serbia lost more than 16,000 of her soldiers, while the invading enemy lost 25,000 troops. The commander of the Second Army, Gen. Stepa Stepanovic, who commanded the Serb forces, was promoted to the rank of vojvoda (duke) in the wake of the battle. The memorial stone reads: Your deeds are immortal (Beta)
