Serbian police (MUP) Gendarmerie Commander Col. Bratislav Dikic says he has excellent cooperation with local ethnic Albanians in Presevo and Bujanovac. With their continuous presence in the area along the administrative line with Kosovo and Metohija, members of this elite police unit "managed to prevent a wave of violence and terrorist activities in the province from spreading over to central Serbia", Dikic stated. The Gendarmerie will continue to operate in this area and to work in the interest of all citizens living there. "We have not encountered problems with the locals in our zone of responsibility, and we have excellent cooperation with state organs, local police and the military," Dikic stated. Commenting on requests coming from ethnic Albanian political leaders in the south for a withdrawal of the unit from the area, the commander said that the presence of the Gendarmerie is necessary, and that his men do not endanger anyone. Instead, "they are in charge of security of the citizens in the area". "Gendarmerie members carry out their tasks in line with their purpose on the whole territory of Serbia, including in the municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja. Those citizens who live in the municipalities have no reason to fear that Gendarmerie members would act in a manner contrary to the law," said he. Dikic, who was appointed the unit's commander on June 1, said that detachments will soon be set up to secure structures and diplomatic and consular offices.
