Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said that it is important for Italy that the Interim Trade Agreement between the EU and Serbia be unfrozen. “Italy is decisively dedicated to convincing its partners in the EU who do not support the unfreezing of the Interim Trade Agreement,” Frattini told Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti. "Agreement with Serbia important" The temporary trade deal is part of the SAA – signed last spring and immediately suspended, pending Belgrade's full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal. Frattini added that Italy wants a summit of EU member-state prime ministers which would, along with Washington, give clear and concrete support for the entrance of the remaining Balkan countries into the European Union. Speaking of the announced visa liberalization starting next year, Frattini said that the EU is continuing talks with Serbian government officials in order to find an acceptable solution for issuing passports to Serbs living in Kosovo. “Italy strongly supports the European integration process of the countries of the Western Balkans. Officially, Rome was one of the first from the ‘western side,’ among the EU member-states, that insisted in writing that visas be abolished for people of this region,” the Italian foreign minister concluded.
