The Serb National Council president in northern Kosovo, Milan Ivanovic, has accused EULEX officials of trying to provoke clashes with protesting Serbs. Serbs from northern Kosovo gathered again yesterday to protest the imposition of new EULEX customs regulations by blocking the main road from Raska to Kosovska Mitrovica. “EULEX wanted to incite clashes” Ivanovic, who is also the municipal vice president of Zvecan, said that several minutes after the protesters had dispersed last night, 30 EULEX vehicles showed up in a show of force and to incite an incident. “It is a good thing that the people dispersed a little earlier, before EULEX police officials came on the scene. Clashes were probably avoided as a result,” Ivanovic said. Kosovo Police Service spokesman Besim Hoti said that EULEX had merely reinforced the escort for their customs officials, who had been on their way to begin their shift at the administrative line in Jarinje. “There was no intention of provoking an incident. EULEX continued down the Ibarska highway towards the border crossing after a short stop in the municipality of Zvecan,” Hoti said. Zvecan and Kosovska Mitrovica residents ended their protests shortly before 22:00 CET. The protesters let everyone pass on the road except for EULEX customs officials. Municipal leaders say they will hold similar protests once a week.
