Serbia is making the fastest progress, which is why it deserves to be rewarded with EU candidate status, says the chief analyst at the European Policy Center. “Serbia is the county that has made the most progress in the last few months in terms of the integration process. I think it would be wise if Serbia was rewarded for that in the coming period, maybe even with candidate status,” Antonio Missiroli told Deutche Welle. "Serbia making fastest EU progress" However, he added, what was impeding Serbia’s path to EU membership was the unresolved matter of Kosovo. The European Policy Center believes that after the experience with Cyprus, the EU cannot afford to consider another country with unresolved territorial issues. “If the Balkans are taken as a whole, even though there are quite a few problems, they can simply be dragged into the EU. All those countries together are less than Romania, and if we were able to integrate Romania, we can do the same with the Western Balkans. That region is geographically already within the EU, as it borders member states on all sides,” Missiroli noted. Yet, the very question of Romania and the last wave of enlargement in 2007 cast a shadow over subsequent admissions, as, he said, Bulgaria and Romania’s admission came too early. The countries had not been ready for such a step, and were now paying the price, but so too was the EU, he said.
