Kosovo Serb officials have differing opinions on President Boris Tadic’s stance that the Serbs should not participate in the Kosovo local elections. The president’s cabinet told B92 that Tadic believed that the conditions needed for Belgrade to encourage Kosovo Serbs to vote in the elections scheduled for November 15 were not in place. Serbs weigh up participation in elections Several Kosovo Serb officials expect a similar stance from the government, while others believe that participation could actually do some good for the Serbs. Although the government has still to give its official stance, Kosovo Ministry State Secretary Oliver Ivanovic expects Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic’s cabinet to fall into line with the president. “The stance of the president is undoubtedly very influential, and I have no doubt that this will be the position of the government as soon as the cabinet meets,” Ivanovic said. He said that a number of things were precluding the government from any other decision. “Firstly, these elections are being organized by the Kosovo government, which means the government of the independent state of Kosovo. Second, it’s organizing them on the basis of the Ahtisaari plan that we’ve rejected. Thirdly, we held elections on May 11 last year, and I doubt very much whether anyone would support elections other than the ones we ourselves held,” said Ivanovic. “We cannot support the participation of Serbs in that sense, in any kind of other local elections,” he said.
