The EU will allocate EUR 9mn to implement a plan for supporting refugees and internally displaced persons in Serbia. Josep Lloveras, head of the European Commission delegation to Serbian, said that this was an important program, especially during the economic crisis, adding that the EU was showing that it was determined to help refugees and stability in Serbia. EU earmarks EUR 9mn for refugees He noted that the EU had already diverted EUR 26.5mn from the CARDS program, and planned to invest a further EUR 26mn in 2010. The program calls for a solution to the living problems of refugees and displaces persons by providing 370 complete sets of construction material, the delivery and assembly of 74 mounted, mobile homes, and the construction of 256 flats. The money will come from 473 “packages” for promoting and expanding commercial and agricultural activity, enabling refugees and displaced persons to gain financial independence. Serbian Deputy Commissioner for Refugees Danijela Polovic-Roko said that there were 97,000 refugees and 210,000 internally displaced persons from Kosovo in Serbia, which was why Serbia was one of the five countries considered to be in an “extended refugee crisis.” She said that EU aid was very important because there were 74 refugee centers in Serbia, 17 of which were in Kosovo. The UNHCR’s representative in Serbia, Lenart Kotsalainen, said that once the plan was implemented, some 1,000 refugees would have a roof over their heads and the ability to gain financial independence. He commended the efforts of the Serbian Commissariat to address the problems, together with non-governmental organizations and local self-governments.
