Two more Serb police officers have returned to their stations in Kamenica, bringing the total number of Serb officers returning to their jobs to 47. Kosovo Police Service headquarters in Pristina say that there are less than two weeks left for officers that left their jobs to return to their positions, adding that they would be permanently suspended otherwise. KPS: 47 Serbs officers returned An appeal was sent earlier from the Kosovo Interior Ministry to all Serb police officers who are on paid suspension until May 15 and unpaid suspension until June 30, to return to their jobs on the force. Both the Kosovo Interior Ministry and the Kosovo Police Service have called on Serb officers to return to their jobs, which they left when Kosovo declared unilateral independence from Serbia in February 2008. The KPS announced that competitions would be called in September or October for new police officers if those under suspension currently did not return by then. The places, they said, would be filled by Serb officers to maintain the police service’s multi-ethnic composition. After the independence declaration Serb police officers demanded to be placed within the UNMIK chain command, rejecting the authority of the KPS. Now, they want to be brought within the EULEX mission’s command chain.
