Vojvodina Hungarian leader Istvan Pastor says it is unrealistic for the draft Vojvodina statute to appear before the national parliament any time soon. Pastor said that the underlying problem was that adoption of this document would have a negative impact on the Democratic Party’s (DS) poll rating. "Statute's fate in DS's hands" “The statute’s fate is in the DS’s hands, and the basic problem with its adoption is that party’s belief that, from the point of view of its rating, that procedure would reflect more negatively than positively,” he told B92. Pastor said that that problem had to be resolved in Belgrade as there was nothing more to discuss in Novi Sad. “Right now, the statute is unlikely to come on the agenda, as there is insufficient courage to move towards dismantling the centralist Serbian state, and that issue will not be discussed in future,” said the Vojvodina Hungarian leader. He said that he was due to meet with President and DS leader Boris Tadic in the next 10 days, when, among other things, he would be discussing the adoption of the Vojvodina statute, adding that the further participation of his party’s four MPs in the government would depend on the outcome of that meeting. “A definitive decision on the Union of Vojvodina Hungarians leaving has not been taken, and it will depend on the meeting with Tadic. That’s certainly something we’ll discuss with representatives of other parties that make up the parliamentary majority,” Pastor said. Istvan Pastor (FoNet, archive)
