Parliament has approved the participation of Serbian Defense Ministry and Army personnel in UN peacekeeping missions to Chad and the Central African Republic. Members of the VS medical corps team will link up with the Norwegian contingent already deployed there. Troops to join UN peacekeeping missions The mission will run for one year, and its expenses will be funded by the tax payer. The decision to deploy a medical corps team of seven members was made by the Serbian government on May 7. Representatives of 36 countries are participating in the military part of the mission in Chad, and 20 in the civilian police part, including Russia, the U.S., France and Austria. This is a humanitarian mission where the Serbian medical corps team will be engaged in dispensing medical treatment to members of all countries involved in the mission, as well as to the local population. Members of the Serbian Defense Ministry and Army are already taking part, independently, in peacekeeping missions to the Congo, Liberia and the Ivory Coast. The VS’s involvement in UN peacekeeping missions in much greater numbers than before is not only in the defense system’s interest, but also an interest geared towards bolstering the country’s foreign political capacity, officials say. UN peacekeeping missions feature purely professional defense personnel sent on a voluntary basis, dispatched via the VS High Command’s Center for Peacekeeping Operations. Personnel selected spend between six months and one year in peacekeeping missions, depending on where they are deployed and on the nature of their assignment. During the time of the former Yugoslavia, which had a major foreign political capacity, around 1,700 members of the then Yugoslav People’s Army took part in the mission to Sinai.
