Sarkozy "supports Kosovo's independence"

French President Nicolas Sarkozy met in Paris on Monday with Kosovo Albanian government head Hashim Thaci. Sarkozy "reiterated France's support for Kosovo's independence and its EU entry", his office said in a statement. Sarkozy "supports Kosovo's independence" "The head of the state repeated to Premier Thaci that Kosovo's independence is irreversible," the statement said, and added that Sarkozy also reiterated that "the choice of the whole of the Balkans should be EU membership". "France supports that perspective and France will help Kosovo to join the EU," the press release further said. It is necessary that the two countries together find a way to work with the goal of gradually overcoming problems from the past," stressed the official statement after the meeting. Sarkozy and Thaci also agreed to "increase efforts" so that French companies would invest in Kosovo. AFP says in its report that this was Thaci's "first visit to France since Kosovo declared independence in February 2008". Paris recognized the unilateral proclamation, which Belgrade considers to be an illegal act of secession.
