Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic has condemned the attacks by the Port of Belgrade's lawyers on B92, adding that the matter will be raised at Thursday’s cabinet meeting. Speaking to B92, Djelic said that normal practice had been rejected and that “the other side must have the chance to express its opinion.“ Deputy PM condemns Port's actions He accused the Port of “stifling the best form of journalism,“ which sought to uncover the truth about things that were of general importance to Belgraders and the country as a whole. Recalling what it was like “when we had no freedom of the media,“ the minister said that he had seen the contentious episode of Insider and that there were clearly serious and legitimate questions, which was why Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas had asked the public defender to look into the case. He said that a report had also been drafted and sent to the prosecution to show that there were elements for criminal prosecution. Djelic said that he would be discussing the matter with Culture and Media Minister Nebojsa Bradic at the government’s next cabinet meeting, stressing that it was important for the government to stand on the side of those media that tried to defend the public interest, as that had to be the government and the media’s common interest. The minister said that an anti-monopoly law had been drafted, and would be adopted at the next session of parliament. He said this law would considerably increase the scope of the Competition Council’s possibilities, adding that “we have to start accepting that that kind of big business exists.“ He said that there was a feeling, particularly in a time of economic crisis, that the survival of media that defended the public interest had to be ensured, and not to be allowed to fall victim to special interests. Djelic said that a working group had been formed by the Culture and Media Ministry, which needed to find a way of helping quality media weather the economic crisis, and that it was vital for Serbian democracy that B92 survived and kept doing its job.
