Former Serbian Ambassador to the U.S. Ivan Vujacic says that Joe Biden’s visit to Serbia shows that the U.S. supports the EU integration of the region. Vujacic told B92 that the U.S. vice-president’s visit to Serbia was very significant, but that it did not mark a new chapter in relations between the two countries. "U.S. supports EU integration" He said that the visit had been very positive and had shown Washington’s interest in forging ties with Belgrade in the given circumstances. However, he said that it did not mean a new era of relations between the two countries, because “nothing concrete happened, no new agreement was signed between the countries, nor have any large American investments been announced.” “But the fact alone that he was here, that he sent the message of support for Serbia’s European integration, is a positive sign that the administration will play a role in this region, and that it will support Europeans, it will be beside them and will not pressure Serbia as was earlier speculated,’ Vujacic explained. Speaking of Biden’s visit to Kosovo, the former ambassador said that the American vice-president had not just given Kosovo officials a message of support for their independence. “I believe that the Albanians heard something else, and that the visit to Decani was a message to the Albanians that American support will to some extent depend on respecting human and minority rights, and the protection of Serbian Orthodox Church shrines. I am sure that he told them that in a very serious way and in a very serious tone,” Vujacic said. He added that Biden’s visit to the region fitted into the general U.S. strategy of uniting Europe and pacifying the region through the process of European integration.
