Serbian officials have announced that security will be raised to a maximum for the visit of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden to Belgrade. The moment Biden’s custom-made Boeing 757 enters Serbian air space, it will be surrounded by Serbian military MIG jets and the entire air space will be closed for at least two hours. Maximum security for Biden visit Biden will have a special limousine waiting for him in Belgrade—a custom Cadillac dubbed “The Beast 2” by American journalists—which is arriving in advance with just some of the 350 American security officials who will be accompanying the vice-president during his stay. The Serbian police have formed a group made up of various experts, who will see to all the needs of the U.S. vice-president. Whole streets will have to be closed, so police are calling on members of the public to show patience and understanding. “We want members of the public to understand this visit properly. There will be traffic jams and everyone should be tolerant,” said Deputy Police Chief Zeljko Nikac. “America is a big country, it takes decisions on a world level, and we, as a small country, have to adjust to reality, to show courtesy, hospitality that day, to be more tolerant to our guest, who is a very important guest,” Nikac said. Biden is the most senior American official to visit Belgrade since President Jimmy Carter visited Yugoslavia in 1980. The Serbian Football Association has also rescheduled the Serbian Cup Final for Thursday because of Biden’s visit. Security measures in Sarajevo are also at their highest level since the visit of Pope John Paul II, or since the formation of the South-East Europe Stability Pact, when world leaders, including then U.S. President Bill Clinton, gathered in Sarajevo. According to media in Kosovo, the authorities have an extravagant reception in store, with primary and secondary school students to line the route Biden’s motorcade will take when coming from the airport to Pristina. Large banners have already been erected in Pristina reading “Thank You America.”
