Interior Minister Ivica Dacic says that Serbia has met all conditions on its Road Map, and that citizens can expect good news regarding visa liberalization. “I do not want to speak of any dates because I think that Serbian citizens have become allergic to any kind of time frames when it comes to EU membership and visa liberalization, and the whole process of quoting dates has led to a lack of trust among citizens and suspicion as to whether will happen at all,” said Dacic. Dacic: Good news about visas Dacic spoke for almost two and a half hours with the delegation, led by European Commission Director of the DG Enlargement Unit for the Western Balkans Pierre Mirel, who did not wish to make any statements after the meeting. “The European Commission is expected to release a status and progress evaluation report for Serbia soon. We expect a positive report from the European Commission, which would kick-start the process that would lead ultimately to the liberalization of the Schengen visa regime for Serbian citizens,” Dacic said. He added that the meeting, held as part of working dialogue between the Serbian Interior Ministry and the European Commission on visa liberalization, covered issues directly related to visa abolishment. “Those are not political issues because visa liberalization is not a political issue, but a field related to internal affairs and justice,” Dacic explained. He said that the meeting had been held in a very optimistic and upbeat atmosphere. Dacic said that what mattered to EU member-states was the existence and implementation of laws needed for Serbia to be a legal state; the existence of security documents; an organized struggle with crime and corruption; control of state borders; and the court and police system’s role in promoting a successful fight against corruption. “We expect the outcome of the talks with the European Commission to be positive. Serbia is not doing this just to have visas abolished or for EU membership, we are doing it for ourselves,” the minister underlined. Ivica Dacic (FoNet archive)
