Ruling Democratic Party (DS) Vice-President Dusan Petrovic says that parliamentary elections will not be called in the foreseeable future. Petrovic told Belgrade daily Blic that his party "won't be making any unreasonable decisions that would drag the country into an election process". Democrats rule out early polls "The Democratic Party holds firmly to its position that, at this time, all our energy needs to be channeled toward creating opportunities for the Serbian citizens and our economy to overcome the economic crisis as painlessly as possible," he was quoted as saying. Petrovic added that the "political stability is Serbia's great advantage", and that it would be irresponsible to "bring down that stability". "Elections could occur only with a decision by one of the participants in the parliamentary majority to leave the fight for the political goals on whose foundations this Serbian government was formed," Petrovic stated. This DS official believes that Serbian president and party leader Boris Tadic opened up a public debate on "essential changes to the political system", with his recently voiced ideas on scaling down the number of parliamentary seats and on a new territorial organization. "It's important to say that no formal procedure to change the Serbian Constitution has started. This is about opening a public debate. We are not close to making any decision on these issues in parliament," said Petrovic.
