B92’s investigative program Insider looks into the land of the Mokra Gora resort which was given to film director Emir Kusturica to administer. The western Serbian mountain resort's status was regulated by a government decision. B92 looks at Mokra Gora ownership issues First, the government founded its own Mokra Gora company in 2005, and named the famed film director the administrator, while the land of about 4,000 hectares was declared a natural treasure. Last year, Mirko Cvetkovic’s cabinet decided to increase the amount of property run by Kusturica to 11,000 hectares, 6,000 of which is in private ownership. Locals believe that the Constitution and their property rights have been violated. Government officials claim that they have not done anything to breach the property rights of citizens. Kusturica says that he is protecting state interests, rather not his own. The government decided to put an added 6,388 hectares of private property under Kusturica’s control, without any consultation with local officials of the municipality of Uzice. "According to environmental protection laws, even the new ones that were passed, there is nothing that says we must consult the local self-administration when we are protecting natural resorts," Spatial Planning and Environmental Protection Minister Oliver Dulic said. "It is another thing with local residents, this can be solved through talks. The local residents must understand that there must be order," he added. "I tell you, think about it and wake up tomorrow and see that 40 hectares of your land has become a national park. And you become a part of that machine for no reason," one local said. "A lie is being created here that I was given the mountain, not taking into consideration that this is one of 614 protected properties, and that inside 11,000 hectares, I have my own private property, like many others, but it is far from having hundreds of hectares, like many others do," Kusturica told B92. The program will air on B92 TV tonight at 22:00 CET and is streamed via the internet. Mokra Gora (FoNet, archive)
