Serbia and the world mark Press Freedom Day this Sunday. Pressure on the media in the country is still present, while several cases of murders of journalists remain unsolved. World Press Freedom Day marked in Serbia The Ministry of Culture issued a statement to appeal on those in charge of the cases to solve the murders of reporters Dada Vujasinovic, Slavko Curuvija and Milan Pantic. Minister Nebojsa Bradic said that pressure on journalists in Serbia and globally, as well as threats to the freedom and independence of the media and journalists, are "unacceptable and condemnable". "Attempts to pressure media representatives, committed by various actors of the social scene, have a good omen as well as the bad one, because they show that a media has a true capacity to make waves and create public opinion," according to Bradic. Freedom House NGO it its recent report ranked Serbia "partially free" when it comes to media freedoms. The Association of Journalists of Serbia (UNS), the Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia (NUNS), the Union of Journalists of Serbia, and the Branch Union of Media "Independence" have all called on their members to mark the day by halting all their activities today at five to noon. May 3 was established as World Press Freedom day by the United Nations General Assembly in 1991. Governments were urged to secure respect of constitutional guarantees for the freedom of the media, while censorship was declared a serious violation of human rights.
