President Boris Tadic met with Austrian counterpart Heinz Fischer in Vienna today, with the main topic of discussion Serbia's further EU integration. The Austrian president welcomed Tadic by saying that he was glad to be able to talk to him about Serbia's European integration. Tadic meets with Austrian president Earlier today, Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger conveyed a similar message, pointing out that the West Balkans' EU accession was one of Vienna's foreign policy priorities. After a working lunch with Fischer, Tadic will meet with Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann. The Serbian president's talks with Austrian officials on the EU integration process will focus primarily on the efforts to unfreeze the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA). Within the EU, Austria is one of the supporters of the implementation of this agreement. Fischer and Tadic met on two occasions in the latter half of last year—first at the UN General Assembly in September, then at an award ceremony in Berlin. The Austrian president called on the EU to help Serbia at the time. Tadic and the Austrian officials will also consider bilateral relations, above all economic cooperation between the two countries. This is the Serbian president’s first official visit to Austria since the unsuccessful conclusion of the Kosovo status talks. Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic was also in Vienna last week, for the first time since recalling the ambassador to Austria, Dragan Velikic, in the wake of Austria’s recognition of Kosovo’s unilateral independence declaration. Austrian media state that Tadic’s visit could help patch up relations between the two countries.
