Serbia can count on the financial supports of the U.S., after an agreement is reached regarding the case of Miladin Kovacevic. State Secretary with the Justice Ministry Slobodan Homen told B92 that the U.S. "would have never handed the Kovacevic case over if the Serbian government did not pay USD 900,000 to the family of Bryan Steinhauer". Justice Ministry: U.S. to offer financial aid Steinhauer was allegedly assaulted brutally by Kovacevic in a barroom fight, after which the Serbian student jumped bail and fled the country. Homen said that "now Serbia can count on the U.S. offering USD 60mn of financial aid". “We will receive all of the aid. You know that there was a proposed law for blocking the assistance, but the 60mn are not a key thing for us. The U.S. influence in world economic institutions is a lot more important. In some, the U.S has up to 40 percent of votes. We were told unofficially that there was readiness to block them,” Homen said. He added that it is still not know which cabinet minister told daily Borba a month ago that there were negotiations of paying damages in the Kovacevic case, even though this was marked a state secret. “The prosecution is working on that. The problem is that the media writes that it was a minister, and our belief is—you know when you prepare for a government meeting, you prepare material—there is a minimum of 100 people who had their hands on that secret material. Everyone must be held responsible. If it was a minister, that minister must be replaced,” Homen said. Four days ago, the government released the details of the Kovacevic case to the public. It was at that time stated that some USD 900,000 was paid in March to the family of the student that Kovacevic assaulted stateside.
