President Boris Tadic and Russian Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu have called for the launch of the South Stream project as soon as possible. Tadic and Shoigu, who is on a one-day visit to Serbia, discussed the implications of the world financial crisis and ways of overcoming it, agreeing that further enhancement of economic cooperation was necessary between the two countries, the president's press bureau reported. Russia’s Shoigu visiting Belgrade Speaking of the situation in Kosovo, Tadic highlighted the importance of Russia's principled position and support to Serbia in the battle to preserve her sovereignty and territorial integrity. Russia's emergency situations minister met earlier today with Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic and Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, and is due to meet later with Interior Minister Ivica Dacic. Shoigu and Cvetkovic discussed economic, energy and cultural cooperation, particularly pressing issues regarding the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS), as well as the settlement of clearing debts, according to a statement. The Russian minister is also expected to meet with senior officials from the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS). According to an earlier statement from the Russian ministry, Shoigu will also focus on the work of the expert Russian de-mining team in the region of Paracin, through which the South Stream gas pipeline is due to pass. The removal of unexploded ordnance left over from the 1999 NATO bombing is set to begin in this region on April 6, before the team moves on to Nis in mid-April. Shoigu and Dacic will sign a protocol on exceptions to the free trade agreement between the two countries. According to earlier statements from the Serbian Economy Ministry, the protocol will liberalize the export of all medicine, meat produce, confectionary products and wines. The protocol also envisions the abolishment of taxes on refrigerators, freezers and other cooling devices. According to the Economy Ministry, the free trade agreement signed with Russia in 2000 liberalized some 90 percent of trade, but failed to be properly applied, which is why an expansion of the agreement was agreed upon in September.
