Spain is flexible when it comes to the date when it plans to withdraw its soldiers deployed as part of NATO's KFOR in Kosovo. This is according to Spanish PM Jose Luis Zapatero, who reacted to criticism coming from NATO after Madrid's decision to pull out its 620-soldier strong contingent from the province. Still no date for Spanish withdrawal "The decision on the soldiers' departure has been made, but we can be flexible on the date of the withdrawal, let it be in a year's time, in 18, or in eight months," Zapatero's spokesman said. It was also said that Spanish Defense Minister Carme Chacon will meet next week with NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer to explain the reasons behind the decision, and to reach agreement on the timetable of the withdrawal. According to news agency reports, this represents a change compared to Zapatero's statement on Friday, when he confirmed that the pullout would take place in four to five months. Scheffer criticized the decision because there was no previous agreement with KFOR, while Washington said it was "very disappointed". Spain is one of the five EU countries that have not recognized the Kosovo Albanian declaration of independence made over a year ago.
