The government felt that it was necessary to consider the Church’s objections to the anti-discrimination law in order to reach a broader consensus, says the PM. Mirko Cvetkovic told daily Politika that the government’s draft anti-discrimination law would be sent to parliament for urgent procedure, and that he expected the law to be enacted by the end of the month. The prime minister said that he had decided to withdraw the law after Religion Minister Bogoljub Sijakovic informed him that religious communities had asked him to offer them one more opportunity to submit further comments on the draft law. He said that the religious communities had not set any ultimatums and that the government could have gone ahead and adopted the law in its previous form, but that it had decided that extending the deadline by one week would not cause any major problems.
