U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has voiced support for Kosovo, promising Washington will continue to lobby for new recognition of its independence. At a press conference following yesterday’s meeting with Kosovo Albanian leaders, including President Fatmir Sejdiu and Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, Clinton said that she had spoken with them about the political and economic challenges awaiting Kosovo, which she called, “the youngest democracy in the world.” Clinton: U.S. support to Kosovo “I told them that the U.S., together with its EU partners, would continue to support the youngest democracy in the world,” said Clinton. On behalf of Kosovo, Sejdiu expressed great gratitude to the U.S. and its people for the strength and steady support it continues to offer Kosovo. “Without the roles of the U.S. and common allies, Kosovo would not be at this point of political currents,” he said. He added that Kosovo leaders had been given assurances by the U.S. secretary of state of the support that Washington would offer. “We were given the powerful support of the U.S. in urging its other friends to recognize the Republic of Kosovo and to speed economic development,” said Sejdiu. Thaci expressed thanks for the U.S.'s support, emphasizing that Kosovo is “a country for all its citizens with established minority rights,” and said he expected Kosovo to quickly become a member of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. “Kosovo independence brought more peace, stability and regional cooperation, as well as a European perspective,” said Thaci.
