Vojvodina Executive Council President Bojan Pajtic says he expects the statute of Vojvodina to be adopted in parliament by the end of March. “It is important to us that both the bill and statute get included in the agenda of parliament in March and to adopt them by the end of the month in order for the province assembly to be able to adopt the budget by March 31, because that is when temporary financing ends." DS official: Statute by end of March "The Serbian parliament speaker made a public promise,” Pajtic, a ruling Democratic Party (DS) official, said in an interview published by Politika on Saturday. According to him, after province secretaries and state ministers "harmonize the text" of the bill on Vojvodina's competencies, the government will send it to parliament and forward it to the Vojvodina assembly. “Therefore, the statute will not be returned to Vojvodina. We will discuss proposed text and amendments to the statute, which will mean technical and terminological harmonization of the statute with the law on competencies. After that, the amendments will go to parliament,” said Pajtic. But the opposition Serb Progressive Party (SNS) on Saturday stated that it will request the Constitutional Court of Serbia to make an assessment of the draft statute that has already been adopted by the Vojvodina assembly. The SNS stated that the party finds “particularly disturbing” Pajtic's statement that after the Vojvodina statute and the accompanying laws get adopted, he would ask the Constitutional Court of Serbia to announce whether there are any unconstitutional provisions in the document. “With his statement, Pajtic and the Democratic Party are mocking the citizens of Serbia, because it is clear to all that in that case, judges of the Constitutional Court who have been elected directly by the Democratic Party would decide about the statute,” the SNS said in the statement. The SNS also said that it will request the Constitutional Court to first give its assessment of the document, because they want to prevent “a marketing post festum evaluation of the statute's constitutionality, which would not be able to fix the damage done”.
