Serbian and Russian Foreign Ministers Vuk Jeremic and Sergei Lavrov have signed an agreement in Moscow abolishing visas for Serbian and Russian citizens. Lavrov said that commercial-economic relations between the two countries were developing quickly and that trade had reached "almost USD 4bn" last year. The gas crisis at the beginning of the year had highlighted the need to build the South Stream pipeline, Jeremic said after the signing. Asked about progress in implementing the energy deal between the two countries, he replied that "the sides are satisfied with how that agreement is taking shape," Itar-Tass reports. This morning, the Serbian Foreign Ministry issued a statement that Jeremic would be traveling to the Russian Federation as part of a bilateral visit and would meet with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Presidential Envoy to the Central Federal District Georgy Poltavchenko. Before departing for Moscow, Jeremic said that in addition to bilateral relations between the two countries, the main topic of conversation would be Kosovo. “We will, first of all, have detailed consultations about joint activities in international organizations in 2009, primarily in the international arena, with regards to Serbia’s struggle to preserve constitutional order, which symbolizes our natural constitutional, political and moral obligation,” said the foreign minister. “As far as bilateral relations are concerned, they are good; one of the important elements is signing this visa-free regime. He said that today's agreement for reciprocal visa-free travel for the two countries' citizens would help boost trade further.
