“Statute does not create state within state”

The Vojvodina assembly speaker says that the province’s new Statute is not creating a state within a state and that the Church should not interfere in politics.

The Vojvodina assembly speaker says that the province’s new Statute is not creating a state within a state and that the Church should not interfere in politics. “That is a completely untenable, unfriendly accusation. The Statute does not envision finance control, police, an army, state security or foreign policy for Vojvodina. None of that is in the Statute, there are no state prerogatives,” said Sandor Egeresi, speaking to daily Vecernje Novosti. “Statute does not create state within state” “As a believer, I respect all church traditions, including the Serbian Orthodox Church. All of them are entitled to their own opinions, and I respect that. I understand that the wound caused by Kosovo is deep, but I don’t think that the Church should mix in state politics. They mustn’t confuse the issue of Vojvodina’s status with Kosovo’s. Those are different things. Vojvodina does not want secession,” he stressed. Egeresi believes that “a real, serious public debate about Vojvodina’s status has now, finally, begun.” When even central Serbia has begun to seriously consider the Statute, that means that it is one of the most important issues in all of Serbia, he said. “I don’t want to direct any accusations at anyone. As speaker of the regional assembly, I just rightly expect that the document will be supported in the national parliament by all parties who supported it in the Vojvodina assembly. I am sure that the Democratic Party (DS), as the most influential party in both assemblies, has to straighten out any disagreements. They also have to say whether the Statute will remain the way it was when we adopted it, or whether they’ve changed their minds about anything,” he said. The speaker believes that no changes should be made to the Statute. “It is only necessary to agree and clearly state provisions in the accompanying law on Vojvodina’s jurisdiction in 26 areas. And the parliament should adopt both acts so that we can finally begin to apply them. Europe won’t wait,” he underlined.
