A Finance Ministry's website page showing that last year the state had spent RSD 9bn more than the law allowed, has disappeared. The ministry officials commented on the missing page by saying that the website is currently undergoing reconstruction, while the opposition claims that the government spent more than it was allowed, and want access to the budget report data. Finance Ministry's annual report "missing" Those who managed to look at the document before it was removed from the website, saw that the extra spending in 2008 amounted to RSD 9bn, which constitutes a criminal act. B92 reporters sent numerous requests for information to the Finance Ministry during the past two weeks. The only response was that the site is being reconstructed, with new appearance solutions considered, and that the page will soon be available. All this, despite the fact that the rest of the website functions normally. And while ruling Democratic Party (DS) MP Jelena Trivan said she was unaware that the data was missing from the website, the opposition Serb Progressive Party (SNS) say they have already requested the data on the budget. Economists are saying that the government "thought up pretty, but unrealistic figures", and that hiding the document now means it is trying to "find a way out". Initially, the 2008 budget deficit was planned at RSD 40.9bn, to be increased to RSD 45.8bn in October last year with the budget review. But the year ended with the deficit of RSD 54.7bn. Current spending, public sector salaries, pensions and social benefits all contributed to the deficit. As for the Finance Ministry website, it is not only missing the 2008 budget report, but also a monthly report for January of this year. According to the previous practice, the January report was due to be published by Feb. 5 at the latest.
