The Vojvodina statute draft was sent to the state parliament in October of last year but has yet to be confirmed. While its adoption is awaited, this sublegal act has become a point of conflict between the ruling coalition and opposition. Vojvodina statute causes friction Former Education Minister and opposition Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) official Zoran Loncar told B92 Radio that there are parts of the statute that are not in accordance with the Constitution and that it gives the province of Vojvodina elements of statehood. He said that an analysis of the document showed that 32 of its regulations go against the Constitution. “The constitutional position of Vojvodina, whether or not it is satisfying to some, is determined by the Constitution, and the task of the statute is not to fix someone’s desires through the statute, but for the statute to enable autonomy defined by the Constitution. If someone is not satisfied, they can change the Constitution,” Loncar said. Meanwhile, Vice President of the ruling Vojvodina League of Social Democrats, (LSV) Bojan Kostres said that the statute draft does not promote separatism, rather that that it contributes to the development of Vojvodina and Serbia as a whole. Kostres said that he hopes that the majority in parliament will pass the statute in March, when the spring session begins. “The Vojvodina statute wants to keep the money that is earned in Vojvodina and we want the Vojvodina administration to serve its residents. We do not want separatism in Vojvodina, and we do not want to jeopardize Serbia as a state, but we think that there are solutions which we know better,” he was quoted as saying.
