Vojvodina Executive Council President Bojan Pajtic, DS, says there are no dilemmas within his party when it comes to the draft Vojvodina statute. Pajtic told B92 this Saturday that a text on a law defining Vojvodina's powers is currently being worked on, and expressed his expectation that the bill, and the new statute, will be adopted at the same time in the Serbian government. "No dilemmas over Vojvodina statute" He also said that some of the articles in the statute's draft came from President Boris Tadic himself. Tadic is also the leader of the Democrats (DS). Rumors have been rife lately in the Serbian media that the issue of the province's most important legal document has caused a rift at the top of the party. "There can still be technical corrections in some places, but no political issue is contentious and neither is any of the essential provisions," said Pajtic. "We will not give up on the idea to have Vojvodina develop based on the European principles of regionalization and decentralization." He added that "in the past couple of days, there has been intensive communication between the provincial secretariats and the state ministries to harmonize the text of the Law on the Authority of Vojvodina". At the same time, another Democrat official and cabinet minister, Oliver Dulic, told Vecernje Novosti daily that the statute will soon be adopted in parliament and that all the parties of the ruling coalition will vote in favor, and added that the DS is "absolutely united" on this issue. He described the media reports of a rift as being "in the realm of projections of someone's wishes to see the party argue, which will not succeed". Dulic said that he is "certain that the opposition, too, understands the need to complete the constitutional powers of the provincial administration". Asked to comment on accusations that the opposition in fact sees the statute as a separatist document, the minster said that "no one is even contemplating an option that would define Vojvodina as a region with attributes of statehood", and accuse a part of the opposition of "constantly having the need to scare the citizens". The Constitution gave Vojvodina three months from the day of the new parliament's first session to adopt the statute draft – which took place on Oct. 15 last year. But the country's top legal document does not set any deadlines for the Serbian parliament's decision to approve or reject this legislation.
