Tomislav Nikolic says he wished to work with the government in the interest of Serbia, and with the opposition in order to – bring down the government. The leader of the Serb Progressive Party (SNS) spoke for daily Politika a day after he was sacked as head of parliament's Administrative Committee, to which he was elected on the Serb Radical Party (SRS) ticket. Nikolic wanted to cooperate "with everyone" The SNS was formed several months ago as an SRS offshoot, and MPs from both parties have ever since been involved in bitter disputes regarding their right to mandates. Nikolic told the newspaper today that he wanted to cooperate with everyone "to a degree acceptable", adding that after his dismissal yesterday, "it is hopefully clear to everyone" that he is "not a joker or a crutch" for the ruling Democrats (DS). Asked whether he will now attempt to bring his party closer to the opposition Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), Nikolic said he is "not offering himself to anyone". "The DSS and [leader] Vojislav Kostunica are persistently avoiding any contact with us. They very often attack what we are doing in parliament and claim that there are some other principles," said Nikolic.
