The Serbian Army (VS) plans to conduct training drills for some 5,000 reserve officers and soldiers this year. Military analyst Aleksandar Radic reminds that this will be the largest-scale activation of the reserve troops since NATO attacks in 1999. Serbian Army to activate reserves As this year's budget was explained in parliament in late December, the government said in its draft that primarily platoon and company commanders will be called up for the exercises, but also officers in charge of batteries, battalions and divisions, and A-class brigade commanders. The drills will be held across the full spectrum of the military sectors in order to ensure the necessary combat readiness of the VS, it was said. Radic reminds that after the 1999 war over Kosovo, the reserves were called up only to strengthen the ranks of some units and during the ethnic Albanians' armed rebellion in southern Serbia in 2001. He also explained that military exercises, which are part of the training of the reserves, have not been organized. Radic reminds that "no country in the world has given up on its reserves regardless of how many professional soldiers it has", and spoke in favor of maintaining the level of training for these troops. In 2009, the budget will set aside funds for 6,967 soldiers and 2,397 Military High School, Military Academy and other army-run schools students. Serbia will also spend money to train 15,000 men who have opted for civilian service. Civil defense, signals and crypto-protection units will also undergo drills this year, it was announced.
