Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic says he has asked the EU to provide Serbia and the Western Balkans countries with assistance in the face of the economic crisis. Despite criticism both from Belgrade and Brussels for being "overly optimistic", Djelic remains convinced that Serbians will, "by the end of 2009", have a visa-free regime of travel to EU states. Djelic "still optimist over visas" At the same time, he believes, the country can make serious progress in its EU integrations process. The first step on that road was made by the government, Djelic told B92, when it decided to unilaterally apply an interim trade deal, which comes as a part of the suspended SAA, starting with the new year.
