The Council for National Security is expected to meet on Monday in Belgrade to discuss the conflict between the defense minister and army chief. President Boris Tadic said earlier that Serbian Army Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Zdravko Ponos and Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac should take some responsibility for their clash becoming public and a topic of discussion in the media. National security council to meet The council is made up of the president, prime minister, justice, defense and interior ministers, military chief of staff, security information agency chief, military security chiefs and officials of the Military Information Agency (VBA). Belgrade media are reporting that there is a small chance of reconciliation between Ponos and Sutanovac and that the army chief of staff might be dismissed in today's session. Daily Blic writes that the defense minister is ready to call for a dismissal of Ponos, and that his biggest “bargaining chip” at the meeting could be the fact that Ponos stated that no defense policy exists in the country. But Vecernje Novosti newspaper reminds that the council does not have the authority to directly dismiss or fine someone, but can propose measures to be undertaken against an individual. “Only Boris Tadic is authorized to sign conclusions and other acts,” the daily writes, adding that it is more likely that the army chief of staff will be dismissed, "because the procedure for doing so is less complicated than for dismissing the defense minister".
