SNS leader Tomislav Nikolic says the EU deployment of its EULEX mission in Kosovo is "a kind of occupation". "The EU is excessively interfering in Kosovo and is siding with ethnic Albanians. Now they don't know how to get out of that situation. The EU is establishing its mission in Kosovo as a form of occupation. The assumption that the Serbs must accept every EU demand, is only provoking resistance," Nikolic told Vienna daily Die Presse. Nikolic: EU interferes excessively Asked whether he can ever imagine shaking hands with Kosovo Premier Hashim Thaci, he said that he would not do that. "Why would I do that. It is still unclear whether he is a war criminal. There was never a trial about this. He is someone who seized a part of our territory," Nikolic stated. "The Serb Radical Party has long been on the road of success. It seemed that it was only a matter of time before it replaced the 'democratic bloc'," he said of the party he left several months ago to form the Serb Progressive Party (SNS). "However," Nikolic continued, "that rise was halted by Vojislav Seselj. I could have withdrawn from politics or tried a fresh start. We have had the first test of the new party in repeated local elections, and it transpired that the popularity of the Radicals rested on us, on those who left the party." Asked whether it was Seselj or himself that had "changed", Nikolic said both underwent changes. "Seselj has spent the past six years in a UN prison. However, in order for someone to lead a party, they must be free – mentally and physically. He changes his mind often. I have changed too, because the circumstances are different. Eight years ago we were against any form of cooperation with the EU. Today we support EU membership, if the Stabilization and Association Agreement defines Kosovo as part of Serbia," he said. "My dream is Serbia that cooperates with the west and the east. Seselj went back to the ideology of the 1990s and is ruling out any cooperation with the west. That's a fundamental conflict. However, hurt egos also played a role. Seselj wishes to lead the party alone, in an absolutist manner," said Nikolic.
