Tomislav Nikolic says his party would not vote for the draft budget in parliament, "even if the government wrote it the way we want it". Nikolic, who leads the opposition Serb Progressive Party (SNS) – formed recently as a Serb Radical Party (SRS) offshoot – said that the draft, yet to be debated by MPs, is an issue that "divides the government and the opposition". Nikolic adamant he's not backing govt. He told Novi Sad's Dnevnik newspaper on Saturday that his party gave PM Mirko Cvetkovic a list of measures to combat the economic crisis. "We did not hide this from the public. But these are the measures brought by the government, and not related to parliament. If some of them had to go through parliamentary procedure, of course we would take part in that," Nikolic continued. The SNS leader also said that his party will not enter a government where its coalition partner is stronger. "We are not the support, we will either be a party that leads Serbia, or that leads the opposition. We will not be a member of a government where someone is the stronger partner since if elections were held today, only the DS would be stronger than us. Why would be partners with them," Nikolic was quoted as saying. He did, however, confirm that he spoke with President Boris Tadic, who is the leader of the Democrats (DS). "We spoke, I called him last week over this oil and gas arrangement [with Russia], however, I must confess I did not learn about the details of the negotiations." He reminded the newspaper of "a thousand times" that he denied speculation that his party might join the government. "Although I state that, the media take my words out of their context, so we have headlines such as, "I can [cooperate] with Tadic". What is it that I can do? I could have s coffee and a chat with him," Nikolic said.
