"Kosovo is independent and that process is irreversible," says former UN envoy Martti Ahtisaari. The Finnish diplomat and this country's former president made the comment in a news conference ahead of a ceremony in Oslo that will see him awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize. "Kosovo's independence is irreversible" He also told reporters in the Norwegian capital on Tuesday that he is "satisfied with the fact that more than 50 countries have recognized Kosovo." The so-called Ahtisaari plan, a blueprint for the province's supervised independence, was never accepted at the UN, due to objections from Russia and Serbia. In an article dedicated to this year's laureate, Reuters says that "until March last year Ahtisaari mediated Serb-Albanian talks on Kosovo as the EU's envoy. He was the architect of a EU-backed plan for Kosovo independence." Kosovo Albanians unilaterally declared independence in February, which Belgrade immediately rejected as illegal. Ahead of the ceremony, Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Peace Prize Committee Ole Danbolt Mjoes told the Belgrade daily Politika in an interview that Ahtisaari "is controversial", but that he also "deserving of the award". Mjoes specifies that the Nobel Committee recognized Ahtisaari for his involvement in the Namibian independence, Aceh autonomy and Kosovo status talks. "That engagement of his was controversial, but he did all he could," Mjoes said of the Kosovo issue. "Bear in mind that several mediators have had only one contribution to peace, while hardly anyone has had several like Ahtisaari – he was also partaking in the Northern Ireland talks, he started the Iraqi initiative." "Ahtisaari arrived to his own conclusion on Kosovo, which was not generally accepted, so he had to say that his mission was over. Still, more than fifty states supported Kosovo's independence. He did a great thing in Namibia, as well as in Aceh. There's still work to be done in Kosovo, that is true," Mjoes told the newspaper.
