Sweden will support Serbia’s efforts next year to get on the Schengen white list and become a candidate for EU membership, says Bozidar Djelic. The deputy prime minister met in Belgrade today with Swedish International Cooperation Minister Gunilla Carlsson. Sweden pledges support to Serbia’s EU goals “Sweden confirmed that it will support our country in reaching its goals for next year,” Djelic said, adding that Sweden’s conditions were the same as the EU’s—full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal. This support, he said, was very significant not only because Sweden was one of Serbia’s main donors and “a county whose voice is listened to,” but also because it would be presiding over the EU in the second half of 2009. Djelic said that it was important for Serbia to be able to count on that support, especially in the fields of European integration, ecology, sustainable development and social cohesion. Carlsson said that Sweden was pleased with its relations with Serbia, stating that it supported its path towards EU membership, and that it would continue to work on securing financial donations and aid for Serbia. “Funds from Swedish taxpayers are being used superbly for implementing projects in Serbia, and these funds will increase,” she said. She added that she and Djelic had discussed ways of stepping up cooperation between Belgrade and Stockholm, adding that this cooperation would be focused on European integration, combating corruption and bolstering administration in Serbia.
