In an open letter to the public today, Belgrade Airport CEO Bojan Kristo has announced his resignation, though he denies any wrongdoing. "I am sorry to have to say that part of our public has fallen for the story that something illegal happened at the airport," Kristo said. Airport CEO announces resignation “Everything was done by the book, but the fact is that the bonuses paid out were considerable by our standards, which is why we decided to return everything that was paid out to the Airport’s budget,” reads the letter from the Nikola Tesla Airport boss. Kristo said that the company’s Board of Directors, comprising members of all Serbia’s political parties, decided to pay the bonuses to Airport management in line with the company’s earnings. Later, the Serbian government adopted the company’s business plan for 2008, which defined the budget for management salaries. “Our sin is that we worked well, and achieved profits four times higher than expected,” he said. "Our sin is that after 10 years of failed attempts, we managed to perfect a take-off and landing system under severe weather conditions, in fog; that we harmonized safety regulations with international standards; that we successfully landed a plane that had caught fire and a plane that suffered a lack of oxygen in the cockpit; that we restructured the company and reduced costs multifold,” the letter states. Calls for Kristo’s resignation had come not only from President Boris Tadic and MPs, but also the G17 Plus party, of which he himself is a member, and which condemned “the outrageously high bonuses” he had been paying out. Kristo paid lump sums of EUR 4,500 to himself and each of the members of the Board of Directors.
