Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic met his British counterpart David Miliband in Belgrade on Wednesday. After the meeting, Jeremic said that no agreement had been reached so far on the reconfiguration of international presence in Kosovo, adding that Serbia would continue its talks with the United Nations on that issue. Jeremic, Miliband meet in Belgrade "Belgrade and London have different stands regarding Kosovo's future status, and no progress has been made in this respect, but we share the same position about the European future of the West Balkans," Jeremic told journalists. Miliband pointed out that Great Britain had backed and would continue to support Serbia's European integration. The British foreign secretary reminded that, in spite of the fact that not all EU member states had recognized Kosovo, all of the Union's 27 member countries backed the EU mission in Kosovo, because, as he put it, EULEX would protect all the residents of Kosovo. Miliband also said, according to a Tanjug report, that admission of all the West Balkan countries into the European Union, including Serbia, would ensure progress and stability in the entire region. "We want that all West Balkan countries, not only Serbia, be admitted into the EU, since this will ensure prosperity and stability in the region," Miliband said at the British Council during a debate on Serbia's European future, in which some 40 young leaders and representatives of non-government organizations took part. Pointing out that UK was committed to the Union's expansion, Miliband said that a strong and successful Serbia would make it possible for the region to also become strong and successful. Earlier in the day, Miliband told journalists that his country was the biggest proponent of European Union expansion, adding that Serbia could receive EU candidate status in 2009. He said that full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal was needed in order for the interim trade agreement with the EU to be unfrozen. Miliband said that he supported “President Boris Tadic’s vision of Serbia, to become an EU member and the leader of the Western Balkans’ integration process.“ He added that the deployment of the EULEX mission in Kosovo was going according to plan, and that accepting the mission was not an added condition for Serbia’s European integration, but it was one for developing “good neighborly relations“.
