According to the official schedule handed to the media at KFOR HQ, Scheffer will arrive in Pristina with members of the NATO Military Committee composed of representatives of the alliance’s member-states. The schedule includes meetings between senior international and Kosovo officials, as well as meetings with representatives of minority communities and a visit to KFOR troops on the field. During the visit, NATO officials are expected to reaffirm the alliance’s determination to retain its peacekeeping contingent in the province, regardless of status or changes at the head of the international civil mission. Nonetheless, the visit will be the first by a foreign minister from the five Western powers since the unilateral declaration of independence. The UK has assumed the leading role in endorsing and defending the independence declaration, and Miliband’s visit is viewed as a new opportunity to offer support to Pristina in terms of the role the EU mission should play in the province. Thaci has rejected the possibility of the deployment not taking in northern Kosovo. “EULEX will be deployed throughout the territory of Kosovo without any conditions attached,“ he stressed.
