Ivica Dacic says that the Interior Ministry (MUP) has worked well in the first 100 days of the new government. The interior minister said that MUP had no new information on the whereabouts of the remaining two Hague fugitives, Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic, but that it was fully prepared to cooperate with the Tribunal. Regarding the Miladin Kovacevic case, Dacic said that the police had arrested him and that he would stand trial in Serbia for the brutal assault of a fellow student at a University bar in upstate New York. Dacic said that he was happy with the police’s work in the last 100 days, especially in tackling drug trafficking. He said that efforts had been made to ensure stability in Serbia and improve citizens’ personal and property security. He said that 11 drug trafficking groups, numbering 53 members, had been busted in the last 100 days. Dacic said that in 2,043 operations, 922.7 kilograms of various drugs had been confiscated: 60.7 kg of which was heroin, 850.7 kg of marijuana, 640 grams of cocaine and 650 grams of hashish. In terms of business and industrial crime, there had been 2,295 cases with 1,433 charges filed against 1,498 suspects, the minister said, adding that two organized crime groups responsible for embezzling assets worth EUR 7mn had also been uncovered. He said that increased efforts to battle all forms of crime and corruption had substantially increased security levels in the country. “That constitutes the necessary conditions for strengthening the rule of law and the functioning of the market economy,” Dacic said, adding that MUP was tackling all serious security challenges and risks that endangered social values and hampered integration and transition processes with organized, strategic responses.
