Parliamentary Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic says that the 2009 budget and the Vojvodina Statute need to be adopted by the end of the year. After meeting with her Hungarian counterpart Katalin Szili and Vojvodina Assembly Speaker Sandor Egeresi in Novi Sad, Djukic-Dejanovic said that parliament must adopt a special law for the implementation of the new Vojvodina Statute as well. Speaker: Budget, Vojvodina Statute are key She said that before it was adopted by parliament, the new text of the Vojvodina Statute must be discussed by MP groups, adding that Vojvodina assembly officials would be participating in these discussions as well. Djukic-Dejanovic said that she hoped that the Statute would be on the national parliament’s agenda soon. “I would like it to be this year. You know the situation in our parliament, but we have two important documents to adopt by the end of the year—the budget and, I think, the Vojvodina Statute,” the speaker said. She said that the law for implementing the statute would also be debated in parliament because without the law, the statute was just “dead words on a piece of paper.” Szili congratulated Vojvodina on adopting its new statute and Serbia for signing the Stabilization and Association Agreement with the EU. ‘It is very important for Hungary that Serbia progresses on the road of Euro-Atlantic integration, and we are prepared to offer support to the Serbian parliament on that road through cooperation between the two parliaments’ expert committees,” Szili said. All three officials agreed that Vojvodina needed to be the motor of Serbia’s development and EU integration. She said that before it was adopted by parliament, the new text of the Vojvodina Statute must be discussed by MP groups, adding that Vojvodina assembly officials would be participating in these discussions as well.

Đukić-Dejanović said that she hoped that the Statute would be on the national parliament’s agenda soon.

Szili congratulated Vojvodina on adopting its new statute and Serbia for signing the Stabilization and Association Agreement with the EU.

All three officials agreed that Vojvodina needed to be the motor of Serbia’s development and EU integration.

Đukić-Dejanović and Szili will meet again on November 18-19 in Budapest, where an agreement between the Serbian and Hungarian parliaments will be signed.
